Paper Shades
Paper lampshades are lightweight pendant shades made from paper or paper-composite materials. They diffuse light softly, come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, and are one of the most affordable ways to finish a pendant fitting. Paper shades are particularly popular for lamp kit builds where a simple, clean look is the goal.
Are paper lampshades safe to use?
Paper lampshades are safe to use with bulbs that stay within the wattage limit printed inside the shade. This is typically between 40W and 60W for incandescent bulbs. LED bulbs run significantly cooler than incandescent at the same light output, so a 6W LED replacing a 40W incandescent produces very little heat and is well within safe limits for paper shades. Never exceed the stated wattage, and do not use paper shades with exposed-element halogen bulbs, which run extremely hot.
What shapes do paper shades come in?
Paper shades are available in drum, cone, oval, and globe forms. Drum shades give an even spread of light up and down and suit modern and Scandi interiors. Cone shades direct light downward and work well over dining tables and kitchen islands. Globe shades scatter light in all directions and are popular in bedrooms and living rooms where a soft ambient glow is the goal.
How do paper shades attach to a pendant fitting?
Most paper shades attach via a gimbal ring, which is a circular wire frame inside the shade's top opening that rests on the shade ring of the lampholder. Check the shade's gimbal ring diameter against your lampholder's shade ring before ordering. Standard E27 pendant lampholders use a 28mm shade ring, which fits the majority of UK pendant paper shades. If the sizes do not match, a shade reducer bridges the gap.
Can paper shades be used with any pendant kit?
Paper shades work with any pendant kit that has a standard shade ring. They are light enough to be used with all pendant lampholder types, including those without a hook ceiling rose, because the shade itself adds very little weight to the fitting. For builds using a long drop or heavy braided rope cable, the combined weight is still well within the capacity of a standard ceiling rose and joist fixing.
