What type of hook do I need for a pendant lamp?
For most pendant lamps, a simple screw hook or hook ceiling rose is sufficient. Screw hooks thread directly into a ceiling joist or a suitable plug in a plasterboard ceiling and provide a hanging point for the flex. Hook ceiling roses combine the hook and ceiling rose in a single unit so the flex hangs from the same point as the electrical connection. These are the most common choice for swag-style pendant builds.
What is the difference between a hook ceiling rose and a separate hook?
A hook ceiling rose is a combined unit where the electrical connections and the hanging hook are integrated into one fitting. A separate hook sits alongside or near the ceiling rose and takes the weight of the pendant independently. Separate hooks are useful when the ceiling rose is fixed by the electrical cable and you want to take the mechanical load off those connections, particularly with heavier shades or longer drops.
What weight can a ceiling hook hold?
The safe load of a ceiling hook depends on what the hook is fixed into. A hook screwed into a solid timber joist can typically hold several kilograms without issue. A hook in a plasterboard ceiling relies entirely on the plug, so the combined weight of flex, lampholder, and shade needs to stay within the plug's rated load, usually 2 to 3kg for standard plasterboard fixings. For heavier fittings, always fix into a joist.
Can hooks be used for swag lamp installations?
Yes. A swag lamp is a pendant that hangs from a hook in the ceiling rather than directly above a ceiling rose. The flex loops from the hook down to the lamp, and a second hook or cable guide is sometimes used to route the cable along the ceiling to the rose. This approach is useful for positioning a pendant light off-centre without moving the electrical connection point.
