A shade reducer is a small ring fitting that allows a lampshade with a larger gimbal ring to fit onto a lampholder with a smaller shade ring. It solves the common problem of a shade and fitting that do not match, without requiring you to replace either one.

What does a shade reducer do?

A shade reducer sits between the shade ring on the lampholder and the gimbal ring inside the lampshade. It bridges the size difference, allowing the shade to sit level and secure on a fitting it was not originally designed for. Without a reducer, a shade with a larger ring opening will sit loosely on a smaller lampholder ring and will not hang straight.

What sizes do shade reducers come in?

Shade reducers are sized by the outer and inner diameter. The outer diameter matches the shade's gimbal ring opening, and the inner diameter fits over the lampholder's shade ring. Common combinations include 45mm to 28mm, 52mm to 28mm, and 58mm to 28mm. If you are unsure of the size you need, measure the inner diameter of your shade's gimbal ring and the outer diameter of your lampholder's shade ring.

Are shade reducers different from shade rings?

Yes. A shade ring is the fixed ring on the lampholder that the shade rests on. A shade reducer is a separate adapter ring that sits between the shade ring and the shade. Some lampholders are sold with a shade ring already attached; others require one to be added. If your shade will not sit correctly on your lampholder, you may need either a different shade ring or a reducer. Measure both before ordering.

What material are shade reducers made from?

Most shade reducers are made from metal, typically steel or brass, which provides enough strength to support the weight of a standard lampshade. Plastic versions are available and suit lighter shades. For vintage and decorative lamp builds, a brass shade reducer pairs naturally with brass or antique lampholder hardware.
